In Lagos, Bigamy is No Longer a Crime
On 15th Dec 2012 the Nigerian state ditched their bigamy law which was based on the UK’s law and influence from it’s colonial past. See full article. With the old English sentence of 7 years imprisonment still on their books they had not prosecuted a single case of bigamy in over 40 years unlike “advanced” and “civilised” Britain which remains one of the few countries in the world to prosecute it.
Noteably it was stated by human rights lawyer Ebun Adegboruwa that with the costs of divorce so high many couples are simply going their separate ways and remarrying. Could this be the real reason why bigamy is kept on the books in the UK – ie to force couples to go through the very expensive and unnecessary divorces here to the benefit and financial gain of the lawyers – surely not?
